Energy efficiency upgrade works at Hotel Expo

Hotel Expo has recently begun a series of improvement works focused on boosting the building’s energy efficiency. This initiative is part of a funding programme to support energy efficiency and circular economy projects within the tourism sector in Catalonia. It’s backed by the European Union through the Next Generation EU fund and Spain’s Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan, with support from the Catalan Government’s Directorate-General for Tourism.

The project included a number of key improvements designed to reduce the building’s overall energy consumption and carbon footprint. These included:
  • Replacing all external windows and frames with higher-performance thermal solutions.
  • Switching out gas-powered boilers for a more efficient aerothermal system.
  • Upgrading the ventilation system and adding heat recovery units.
  • Connecting the installations to the building’s central control (BMS) for smarter energy management.
  • Adding energy-saving systems that activate when rooms are empty or windows are opened.
  • Replacing existing lighting with low-consumption LED alternatives.
Once completed, the works have significantly enhanced the hotel’s sustainability performance, delivering up to a 69% reduction in non-renewable primary energy use and cutting CO₂ emissions by as much as 72%.
